Prop. 8 Observation

Looks like Prop 8 has passed. One thing to note in the state map of county-by-county votes on Prop. 8 is that it passed in Los Angeles County, where Obama swamped McCain with nearly 70 percent of the vote. This can only mean that the Hispanic vote came out in favor of Prop. 8.

Run your mouse up to San Francisco on the map, where 23 percent voted in favor of Prop. 8. I would have thought you’d have a hard time finding 23 people, let alone 23 percent, in favor of Prop. 8 in Baghdad-by-the-Bay.

UPDATE: Byron York has looked at the CA exit polls, and it turns out that the margin of victory apparently came from black voters (by a 70-30 margin), most of whom resent or disagree with the comparison of gay marriage to the civil rights movement. White voters actually rejected Prop. 8 by a narrow margin, and Hispanics supported it narrowly.

Byron York's observation ought not to go unremarked upon by those who pay attention to this site. I am not at all surprised by it but I find it stunning that so many conservatives with whom I speak (both active and instinctual conservatives) are stunned by it. This shows an incredible lack of political imagination and, I think, understanding of our own principles. This group of voters should be with us--or at least not so uniformly marshaled against us. Explaining clearly the differences between the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement is the first step in getting there. The second step is building a rhetorical bridge to friendship with them. That will involve calling out the condescending stupidity of white liberals and acknowledging what is true in their accumulated distrust of some white conservatives.

It's kind of interesting to look at prop 8 like the Prohibition amendment of the 20's - a constitutional amendment that limits rights on moral grounds. Admittedly, there was a lot more demand for alcohol then there is for same-sex marriage. Still, I wonder if it will lead to any similar trouble. Underground marriage is my guess.
